Coleman is a native of Blackpool Lancashire. She was educated at Arnold School in Blackpool. As headgirl, she earned straight A grades in her A Levels. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who announced in a news event on 21st of March, 2012, that Coleman will take over the role of Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat claimed that he selected Coleman to play the role of companion due to her ability to be the best companion for Smith. Also, Moffat noted that she spoke faster than Smith.
